Smile Transformation

Importance of smile

Studies have shown that a simple smile can act on your body and mind in a variety of positive ways, offering benefits for your health, your mood and even the moods of people around you:

  • Smiling may make you live longer – one 2010 study found that a genuine, intense smile is associated with longer life. Happy people seem to enjoy better health and longevity, this is suggested to be related to the maintenance of a happy, positive mood which in turn contributes towards a healthy lifestyle.
  • Smiling relieves stress – there is evidence to show that smiling offers relief to acute stressors or as an antidote to a passing negative mood.
  • Smiling boosts your immune system – It is thought that when you smile, immune function improves because you are more relaxed due to the release of certain neurotransmitters.
  • Smiling may lower blood pressure – We know that laughter lowers blood pressure. Smiling has been shown to lower your heart rate and therefore may also be seen to reduce blood pressure as a result.
  • Smiling reduces pain – Smiling releases endorphins, serotonin and other natural painkillers. Together these chemicals elevate your mood, relax your body and reduce physical pain. Smiling at the dentist may have its benefits after all.
  • Smiling makes you more attractive to others – We are naturally drawn to people who smile. While more negative facial expressions like frowns, scowls and grimaces work in the opposite manner, effectively pushing people away. People often assume you have more positive personality traits if you are smiling.
  • Smiling makes you look younger – The muscles we use to smile also lift the face, making a person appear younger. So instead of opting for a facelift, just try smiling your way through the day, you’ll look younger and feel better.

Smile transformation options

The ideal smile transformation is unique to each individual with no two cases ever being the same. The treatment undertaken is different from person to person but often involves either one or a number of the following:

a Crowns

€450 (standard crown – per tooth) €690 (premium crown – per tooth)

A crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that’s placed over a weak or damaged tooth to improve its shape, size, strength, or appearance. If you have heavily filled teeth or teeth with significant changes required, this may be the most suitable treatment option for you. In a well-maintained mouth, most crowns can last up to 15 years. Crowns are generally thought of as being more durable than veneers Before a crown is fitted, however, the existing tooth must be reduced in size by filing it down giving space for the crown to be cemented over it, fully encasing the tooth. Crowns are theoretically more long-lasting than veneers and composite bonding, however, this cannot be guaranteed if relies on many factors such as oral hygiene, diet, lifestyle habits and general health. This treatment can be carried out usually in two or three visits, usually taking between 1 hour and 1h 30 minutes per tooth.

a Veneers

€500 per tooth

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells that cover the front surface of teeth. These are bonded to the front surface of the teeth only, changing their colour, shape, size or length. Veneers can be made from porcelain or composite. Veneers offer a conservative approach to changing a tooth’s colour or shape when compared to crowns, but the process is not reversible. This treatment is most appropriate if moderate changes are required in a patient with slightly damaged or filled teeth. Veneers are permanent and longevity is likely to be superior to that of composite bonding, however inferior to that of crowns. In a well-maintained mouth, it is not uncommon to get more than 10 years from veneers however these can chip and break over time as they are thinner and therefore weaker than crowns. This treatment can be carried out usually in two or three visits, usually taking between 1 hour and 1h 30 minutes per tooth.

a Composite Bonding

€125-€275 per tooth depending on the number of surfaces altered

Composite bonding is a process where white dental material can be used to “bond” to the natural teeth in order to make fine alterations to their appearance. Composite bonding has many purposes but is most commonly used to improve the cosmetic appearance of the teeth by adding length, fixing small chips, closing gaps or even masking slight rotations of teeth. It has become very popular as a treatment for improving the appearance of the smile as it usually does not require any use of a dental drill, therefore making it far less invasive and also more cost-effective when compared to other options such as porcelain veneers and crowns. These results are permanent however longevity is inferior to that of veneers or crowns. In a well-maintained mouth, it is not uncommon to get 5-10 years from composite bonding before refinement or replacement is required. This treatment can be carried out in one visit, usually taking between 30 minutes and 1 hour per tooth.

a Orthodontic treatment

Price varies depending on the treatment required.

Orthodontics, often more commonly referred to as “braces” or “Invisalign” are treatments that can be used to correct crooked or misaligned teeth, and can improve the health and appearance of anyone’s smile, adult or child. This works by applying steady pressure over time to slowly move teeth into alignment. This will not change the colour, shape, size or length of the teeth but is often a sensible first approach to any cosmetic smile transformation. These results are permanent as long as retainers are worn to prevent relapse. Treatment can take anywhere from 6 months to 3 years.

Key components of a beautiful smile:

1 – Tooth Colour – it is well known that yellow or stained teeth are viewed less favourably than teeth whiter in colour.

2 – Tooth Position – Straight, balanced, symmetrical teeth are viewed more favourably. Whilst the cant, or tilt of the teeth and midline are also considered fundamental in dental beauty.

3 – Tooth Size – Humans seem to have an innate sense of when teeth are the right size for a smile, thus being aesthetically balanced within a person’s face.

4 – Tooth Visibility – Individuals who show just a bit of their teeth are considered less confident and possibly less attractive as a result. Ideally, your smile should reveal most of your teeth and form a gentle arc sweeping back into the “buccal corridor”, the dark space between your teeth and the corners of your mouth,

5 – Gum Display – The amount of gum that is shown has a dramatic effect on how the smile is perceived. Some people have an upper lip that pulls far up, showing a large amount of gum. This type of smile often makes the teeth look smaller and in turn less aesthetically pleasing.
