Combined Orthodontic and Oral surgery treatment

As part of your orthodontic treatment plan, you may require the help and intervention of our Oral Surgery team. All Specialist Oral surgery procedures are carried out by our Specialist Oral Surgeon, Mr. Chris Bell. All procedures are performed ‘in-house saving you the time and expense of travelling further afield. If required, your procedure may be performed under IV Sedation.

You may be referred to our Oral Surgery team if you have:

  • An ‘Impacted’ tooth- An impacted tooth is a tooth that is ‘blocked’. It may be blocked by another tooth, or gum, or bone and cannot break through into the mouth. This may require surgical intervention which removes the ‘blockage’ and ‘exposes’ the tooth in the mouth, allowing orthodontic tooth movement. The most common impacted teeth are your wisdom teeth, the second most common impacted teeth are canines. Canines may be impacted in the palate (roof of the mouth) or in the gum. Impacted canine teeth may cause the roots of adjacent teeth to resorb i.e. dissolve/shorten. When teeth have shortened roots, they can become loose, this can lead to tooth mobility and possibly tooth loss. Removal or repositioning of these canine teeth can reduce these risks. Additionally, central incisors may be blocked and require exposure.
  • Supernumerary teeth – This is the developmental excess of the usual number of teeth. If you have developed more or ‘additional’ teeth, they may require removal if they hinder tooth movement and orthodontic treatment.
  • Hypodontia- This is the developmental absence of one or more teeth excluding the wisdom teeth (third molars). This is a common condition and sometimes requires treatment by a combination of Specialist Orthodontics and restorative dentistry. The replacement of missing teeth may require the placement of dental implants.
