What is orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic treatment is a treatment to straighten teeth.
It usually involves wearing some form of brace such as a removable brace, a functional brace (growth modification brace) or a fixed brace. It may involve the extraction of teeth and very occasionally jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery).
Why might I need orthodontic treatment?
Here are some of the main reasons for having orthodontic treatment:
Orthodontic Treatment - The Process
At Colm Smith Smith Dental & Specialist Centre we pride ourselves in ensuring we carry out a thorough comprehensive orthodontic assessment and you are fully informed of all your options prior to commencing treatment.
We offer a range of orthodontic appliances including Invisalign, fixed metal or cosmetic braces, removable and functional appliances and fixed and removable retainers.
Appointment 1- Dental Assessment
Prior to seeing the orthodontist, you will be asked to see the dentist to check your teeth and ensure you are suitable for braces. The dentist will carry out a full dental examination to check your gums and teeth. You may be advised by your dentist that you need fillings and if the health of your gums are suitable for orthodontic treatment. If you have gum disease, you will be advised to treat this prior to commencing orthodontic treatment. The risk, if this is not addressed before orthodontic treatment, is that orthodontic treatment will make this condition worse leading to loosening and possible loss of teeth and failed treatment.
Appointment 2- Orthodontic Assessment
Following this, you will be booked in to see the orthodontist, Dr. Ann Smith Specialist Orthodontist or Mr. Keith Isaacson, Consultant Orthodontist. The orthodontist will carry out a full orthodontic assessment which will include photographs, a full mouth scan and may include x-rays. At this stage, you will be informed which orthodontic treatment(s) are most suitable for you.
You may be advised that you are not yet ready for orthodontic treatment and may need to see the orthodontist again when you are a little bit older. You will be given information leaflets about the treatment and informed about the cost. The pros and cons of treatment, the length of time the treatment will take and the commitment needed on your part will be explained. We encourage everyone to read these leaflets and think about which treatment option is best for you.
Your assessment will take approximately 1hour and 15 minutes and will include the following:
- Digital intraoral scan
- Photographs
- Radiographs (if required)
- Full orthodontic clinical exam by Specialist Orthodontist, Dr. Ann Smith or Consultant Orthodontist, Mr. Keith Isaacson.
- Written information on all treatment options available to you
- Written quote for all orthodontic options available to you
- Free smile simulation- See potential before and after
- Free follow up discussion appointment to discuss the outcomes of the assessment and answer any questions you may have
