Orthodontic treatment for Children
Early detection of orthodontic issues may help resolve problems that would ordinarily arise in the adult dentition.
It is advised that children see a Specialist Orthodontist for their initial assessment from the age of 7 years old. This allows for early detection of issues that may be more difficult to treat when your child has completed growth. If treatment is required at this stage, it is commonly known as interceptive treatment.
However, most orthodontic treatment is carried out between the ages of 11-15 years old. Dr. Ann Smith, Specialist Orthodontist will be more than happy to advise you if it is appropriate to intervene at an early age or to wait until all of the adult teeth have erupted.
Possible Treatments
Arch expanders
arch widening if the arch is constricted, can provide space for straightening the adult teeth and possibly eliminate the need for extractions at a later date.
- RME Rapid Maxillary Expansion for upper arch expansion
Space maintainers
Maintaining space after the early loss of baby teeth can provide space for straightening the adult teeth and possibly eliminate the need for extractions at a later date.
Growth Modification
The rationale for early growth modification is to intercept a developing jaw problem, preventing the need for future jaw surgery.
Eliminate crossbite with a Jaw displacement ‘slide’
removing this can reduce the risk of this developing in the adult teeth.
