What are Dental Crowns?

What are Dental Crowns?

A crown (sometimes known as a ‘cap’) is an artificial covering that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth.

Crowns are an ideal option for teeth that have been broken or have been weakened by decay or a very large filling. They can be made from a variety of materials, the most common of which are porcelain or gold or a combination of both.

Am I suitable for a Dental Crown?

A dental crown could be used for several reasons, for instance;

Improving the appearance of discoloured fillings

Replacing a large filling when there isn’t enough tooth remaining

Protecting a weak tooth from fracturing

Restoring a fractured tooth

Covering a dental implant

Covering a discoloured or poorly shaped tooth

Providing a protective seal after having root canal treatment.

To act as retention for a bridge or denture.

What is involved in getting a Dental Crown?

a Visit 1

Visit 1: At the first visit, your dental team will prepare the tooth. This will involve removing a layer of the outer surface, leaving a strong inner core. The amount of the tooth removed will be the same as the thickness of the crown. Once the tooth is shaped, the dental team will take an impression (mould) of the prepared tooth, one of the opposite jaw and possibly another to show the way you bite together.

The impressions will then be given to a dental technician, along with information about the shade to use and any other information they need. A temporary crown will be made so that you can use the tooth while you wait for the crown to be made. This crown may be more noticeable but is only temporary.

a Visit 2

Visit 2: At the second visit, your dentist will fit the permanent crown. There will usually be about 2 to 4 weeks between appointments.

Are there any risks or complications involved with having crowns?

a 1. Expected complications
  • Numbness lasting a few hours.
  • Soreness of the gums lasting a few days.
  • Sensitivity of the prepared tooth/teeth lasting up to a few weeks
a 2. Common risks and complications
  • Trauma to other parts of the mouth including adjacent teeth, gums, cheeks, tongue etc.
  • Darkening of a root of the tooth depending on the material used.
  • Debond of a temporary crown (i.e. the temporary crown may loosen, fracture or fall out).
  • Discolouration of a temporary crown.
  • Inability to return a tooth to a perfect shape which could result in it being more difficult to maintain.
  • Altered bite on the final crown which may take a few weeks to ‘settle in’, or may require adjustment.
  • Removing tooth material to make space for the crown can irritate the nerve inside the tooth sometimes leading to the nerve dying and causing toothache. There is approximately a 20% risk of loss of vitality, meaning the nerve in the tooth may die and require root canal treatment. If this occurs it will require an additional cost.
  • Fracture of the tooth holding the crown can occur long-term and may result in a new crown being required or the tooth may need to be extracted.
a 3. Rare risks and complications
  • Trauma to tissues underneath the tooth including bone, sinus, nerves supplying other teeth etc.
  • Allergic reaction to something used during the procedure.
  • Trauma or injury to the muscles or jaw joint which may require follow-up care, or referral to a dental specialist.
  • Prolonged or permanent numbness, tingling or altered sensation.

Budget Crowns

Painless Wisdom Tooth Removal

The practice recognises the recessionary times we currently live in and the growth in dental awareness and high standards of our patients. For those who cannot afford the premium crowns, the practice can provide a less expensive crown to a good standard.

These crowns are similar to those provided by the NHS in the UK & Northern Ireland. Whilst the cosmetics and quality of a budget crown will not match a premium crown, delivering this crown will allow our dental team to control the long-term management of the mouth especially the preparation of the tooth. Patients may later opt to replace this crown with a premium type. The guarantee for a budget crown is 1 year (5 years for a premium crown).
